A painting about painting — and a wink at the whole circus of it. Staged in the theatrical hush of Odd Nerdrum's studio, it shows a younger master studying an older one, who himself spent a lifetime copying the masters before him. Equal parts homage to classical technique and gentle roast of the artist archetype, it turns the viewer into part of the scene, and asks the old question the art world keeps circling: where does originality end and inheritance begin?

The greatest painting of the greatest painter painting the greatest painter of all time.

A collaboration between Guttestreker and Jonathan Chedeville. This is an oil painting created in the spirit of Odd Nerdrum and William Heimdal, built around the idea of "roasting" the classic artist archetype — staged in a convincing, theatrical studio scene inspired by Nerdrum's actual studio in Stavern. The painting is meant as a tribute to classical painting technique, and draws on elements from Heimdal's own upbringing and history.

The work is a meta-commentary on the circle of art: a younger artist (Heimdal) studies and paints an older master (Nerdrum), who was himself known for copying and carrying forward classical painting technique. It takes up questions of originality, learning and inheritance in the history of art — and at the same time reads as a reflection on the artist's own identity and place within the tradition.

The scene has a theatrical quality, too, drawing the viewer into a larger story. It conjures an illusion of reality, while also making us aware of the painting's own construction.
